GE refrigerator error codes: what they mean and what to check

What a code on a GE refrigerator means
A code on the dispenser panel of a GE refrigerator is either a fault the control detected or a feature you turned on. GE’s support site documents six fault codes and two feature indicators, and the two feature indicators are often mistaken for faults. The table below lists every code on GE’s support site, what GE says it means, and the safe check for each.
GE’s general advice for any code is to disconnect power for one to two minutes, which resets the control panel and clears the code in many cases. If the code returns, the condition is still there.
Verified GE refrigerator codes
The meanings below are quoted or paraphrased from GE’s refrigerator error, fault and function codes support page.

Demo mode versus a defrost fault
GE uses DE with a capital D for demo mode and dE with a lowercase d for a defrost fault, and the two look similar on a segmented display. Demo mode is a showroom setting that lights the panel and disables cooling. It gets switched on by accident on new fridges and after a control board replacement. A fridge in demo mode looks fine, sounds quiet and does not cool.
A defrost fault is different. The freezer in a frost-free GE fridge melts frost off its evaporator on a schedule. When that stops working, frost builds on the back wall of the freezer, the airflow to the fresh food section chokes, and the fridge compartment warms up while the freezer stays cold. Reset once. If dE returns or frost is visible, book a visit.
FF and CC: the temperature codes
FF and CC are the codes that matter most for the food in the fridge. FF means the freezer is warming, and GE’s first instruction is to check the frozen food. CC means the fresh food temperature is wrong. Both can be caused by a door left ajar, a gasket that has stopped sealing, a fan that has failed, or a defrost problem. The safe checks are the same as for a GE fridge that is not cooling: test the door swing, look at the gasket, clear the vents and check the coils.
If the code appears during a heat wave in a Rexdale or Thistletown home without air conditioning, give the fridge a few hours before concluding it has failed. GE notes that a fridge may not cool properly in a room above 110 degrees Fahrenheit, and a hot kitchen makes the fridge work harder.
Codes not on this list
GE’s public support page does not document codes beyond the eight above. Newer GE, GE Profile and Cafe models with full text displays may show written messages instead of two-letter codes. If your fridge shows something not listed here, note the exact text and the model number from the label inside the fresh food compartment, and pass both on when you book. What not to do
Do not keep resetting a fridge that shows FF or CC while the temperature climbs. Move the food to a cooler or a neighbour’s freezer and book. Do not chip frost off the freezer back wall with anything hard. The evaporator behind the panel is thin and a puncture turns a defrost repair into a sealed system repair.
