GE refrigerator not cooling: causes and when to call

What makes a GE refrigerator stop cooling
A GE refrigerator stops cooling for one of four reasons: the cold air is not being made, the cold air is not being moved, the cold air is leaking out, or the control is not asking for cold. The common causes are a blocked airflow, a failed fan, a defrost problem or a worn door gasket. A compressor or sealed system failure is less common and usually shows up on older fridges.
The first three causes leave clues you can spot without tools. The checks below cover what GE’s own support site recommends before booking service.
Safe checks before you book
Start with the settings. GE’s support site notes that on dial or digital models you make the fridge colder by moving the control one number higher, and on actual temperature readout models you set the number lower. A control that was bumped during a grocery unload is a common and free fix.
Check the doors next. Open each door halfway and let go. A GE fridge door should swing shut on its own. If it stays open, the fridge may not be level or something inside is pushing against the door. Run a hand around the gasket and look for gaps, tears or a section that has pulled away from the door.
Look at the airflow inside. Large containers pushed against the back wall of the fresh food section can block the vents that bring cold air over from the freezer. GE also asks for at least 1 inch of clearance on each side, the top and the back of the cabinet so the coils can shed heat.
Check the condenser coils. On many GE models the coils sit behind a kick plate at the bottom front or on the back of the cabinet. GE’s support site says dirty coils make the sealed system run less efficiently. Unplug the fridge, then use a soft brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment on the coils. Do not touch any tubing, fittings or wiring.
Confirm the power. A fridge with no interior light and no sound may be on a tripped breaker or a loose plug. GE says a fridge that has just been serviced may still be in diagnostic mode, and disconnecting power for 30 seconds resets it.

What not to touch
Do not open the back panel inside the freezer to chip away frost with a tool. The evaporator coils behind that panel are thin and puncture easily, and a puncture turns a defrost repair into a sealed system repair. Let the freezer defrost naturally with the door open and towels on the floor if you want to test whether frost was the problem.
Do not attempt to test the compressor, the start relay or the control board. These parts are live at wall voltage while the fridge is plugged in. A GE technician tests them with the proper equipment and replaces them with GE-sourced parts.
Do not add refrigerant or buy a recharge kit. A low charge means there is a leak, and the leak has to be found and repaired before the system is recharged.
