GE dryer not heating: thermal fuse, heating element or vent?

A GE dryer that runs but does not heat points to a vent, thermal fuse or heating element. Safe checks for Etobicoke homes and when to call Wayne.
Why a GE dryer runs but does not heat
A GE dryer that tumbles but blows cold air has a working motor and a failed heat path. On an electric dryer the heat path is the 240 volt supply, the thermal fuse, the thermostats and the heating element. On a gas dryer it is the gas supply, the igniter, the flame sensor and the gas valve coils. A restricted vent can knock out either type by tripping a safety device.
GE’s support site starts with the simple causes for both types: the wrong cycle, a blocked front grille, and the power supply. Those are also the checks you can do safely at home.
Safe checks before you book
Check the cycle and temperature selection. GE’s support site says the cycle should be set to a dry cycle, not fluff or cool down, and the temperature should not be set to air or no heat. A dryer left on an air fluff cycle after a delicate load is a common cause of no heat, with a free fix.
Check the breaker. GE’s support site notes that an electric dryer may run on a partial 120 volt supply but will not heat without the full 208 to 240 volt supply. A double-pole breaker can trip on one side and still look on. Turn the dryer breaker fully off, then fully on, and run a timed dry cycle. Do not open the panel or touch the dryer’s terminal block.
Clean the lint filter and check the front of the dryer. GE says proper airflow is needed for the dryer to dry properly, and the front grille must not be blocked.
Check the vent. Run the dryer on a heat cycle and hold a hand at the outside vent hood. Weak or no airflow with the dryer running means a restriction somewhere in the run. For a gas dryer, do not touch the gas valve or the gas line. If the dryer was recently installed or there has been work on the gas line in the home, mention that when you call, because it changes where Wayne looks first.

A thermal fuse is a one-time safety device. Once it opens the dryer will not heat again until the fuse is replaced. Replacing the fuse without finding the cause means the new fuse opens the same way. That is why the vent is checked as part of a no-heat repair.
Gas dryers versus electric dryers
An electric GE dryer heats with a coiled element on a 240 volt circuit. A gas GE dryer heats with a burner fed from the home’s gas line, and it plugs into a regular 120 volt outlet. Both types use the same drum, motor, belt and vent system, so airflow problems look the same on either one.

What not to do
Do not remove the back or front panel of the dryer to look at the element or the fuse. The terminal block on an electric dryer stays live unless the breaker is off, and the element can be damaged by handling. Do not bypass a thermal fuse to test whether the dryer heats. The fuse is there because the dryer has already overheated once.
