GE dishwasher not draining: what to check before you call

Why a GE dishwasher stops draining
A GE dishwasher that leaves water in the bottom of the tub has a blocked drain path, a drain pump that is not running, or a control that is not telling the pump to run. GE’s support site puts food debris, a clogged filter, a kinked drain hose and a clogged sink drain at the top of its list, and those four are worth checking before you book. The pump and the control come after the simple causes have been ruled out.
Most of the checks below need no tools. Set aside fifteen minutes, a cup for bailing water and an old towel.
Safe checks before you book
Clear the bottom of the tub. GE’s support site says to remove large pieces of food like noodles, lettuce or bones from the bottom of the dishwasher, and to make sure no paper or large object is covering the sump area at the rear of the tub.
Clean the filter. On GE models with a Fine and Ultra Fine filter, twist the filter assembly out, rinse it, and lock it back in. A filter that is not seated can let debris straight into the pump.
Check the drain hose under the sink. GE says to look for a blockage or a kink where the hose connects below the sink. Older homes in Alderwood, Sunnylea and Humber Valley Village often have a hose that has been reused through more than one dishwasher, and GE notes that reusing a worn hose promotes kinking and blockage.
Run the sink and the disposer. A clogged kitchen sink drain backs up into the dishwasher. If a disposer is installed, GE says to run it to clear the drain system. If the disposer was installed within the last few months and the dishwasher has not drained since, the knockout plug inside the disposer may still be in place.
Check the air gap. If a chrome cap sits on the counter beside the tap, GE says to remove the cap and clean out any buildup.
Check the detergent. GE’s support site says the wrong type or too much detergent causes over-sudsing that can stop the dishwasher from draining properly. Use only dishwasher detergent, and less of it in a soft water area.

Installation matters more than most people expect
GE’s support site says that when an air gap is not used, the drain hose must be looped up and attached to the underside of the counter. This high loop stops sink water from running backward into the dishwasher. A dishwasher installed without the loop will drain during the cycle and then refill with dirty water from the sink line. This shows up on dishwashers replaced without the hose being re-routed, and the fix is a matter of routing the hose correctly.
What not to do
Do not remove the sump cover or the pump to clear a blockage. The pump housing holds the impeller and the wiring, and the parts under the cover are easy to damage. Do not pour drain cleaner into the dishwasher tub. Drain chemicals damage the seals and the pump, and they sit in the tub where the next cycle spreads them across your dishes.
